Angelina Jolie “overshadowed” St. John

Hollywood celebrity Angelina Jolie, the ex-spokesperson for St. John, allegedly “overshadowed” the brand, resulting in the company signing up British model Karen Elson as its new face.

St. John chief executive Glenn McMahon told WWD she “overshadowed the brand. We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette.”

“We needed to show a modern point of view of St. John. We are evolving the brand,” McMahon said in another statement.

St. John this week launched a new spring 2010 print advertising campaign featuring Elson, 30, a redhead who is married to White Stripes singer Jack White.

The Relationship Between Celebrities and Fashion Brands

If there’s anything that has gone hand in hand for years, it’s the world of celebrity and the world of fashion. Whether you’re paying attention to certain designers swathing their favorite celebrities in couture brands or are keeping up with the ever-expanding Gaga empire and its foray into fashion, it’s never gotten old..

Everyone–from musicians to artists–has managed to score exclusive deals with designers eager to outfit them for the stage or screen, and everyone knows that the first questions being asked on the red carpet are often “who are you wearing?”

Even Monica Lewinsky’s first move after the 1990s Bill Clinton drama was to try to launch a handbag line; that’s a savvy businesswoman.

While it might have once been a unique idea for celebrities to not just sport the colors and wares of a favorite designer but to strike out on their own as the talent, today it’s becoming more commonplace.

Whether it’s rapper Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and his line Sean Jean or Madonna and her daughter Lourdes launching their own clothing line for teenagers and juniors, it seems like the concept of getting into the business of clothing is becoming as commonplace as releasing a Christmas album or a fragrance. And while there are some serious celebrity missteps, sometimes people actually manage to succeed at taking on the challenge of designing clothing.

It seems like those who have the best luck at combining the world of celebrity with fashion lines that actually work are native New Yorkers, and it’s definitely not just musicians who are getting into the game. Acclaimed and somewhat quirky actress Chloe Sevigny has managed to succeed quite admirably with her line of clothing for Opening Ceremony.

Though the inspirations are rather mid-1990s, the execution is surprisingly successful. From loafers inspired by her father’s old shoes to reasonably priced canvas bags, Sevigny definitely has better taste in clothing than she does in directors (Vincent Gallo, anyone?)

Of course, if there is anyone out there who understands the relation between the fame monster and fashion, it is definitely Lady Gaga. A former lower upper class Catholic schoolgirl turned international celebrity, Gaga has employed famous fashion photographers and designers alike to help craft her meticulously weird look.

Befriending (and exploiting) the names of those far more talented than she is, Gaga has managed to make plenty of friends and enemies with her approach to borrowing from fashion. The latest moves to get her name into the paper?

The design to launch a clothing line as part of the Haus of Gaga, and the never-ending approach to destroying Hermes Birkins, the Rolls Royce of handbags.

Considering that these go for tens of thousands of dollars, it makes sense that most celebs lucky enough to snag one of these highly-coveted bags would leave them as-is, but not Gaga. She opted to put spikes into one Birkin, and wrote about being a little monster in Japanese on another.

Whether it’s actually a fashion-forward approach to interacting with a brand or simply antics befitting a teenager, Gaga definitely manages to keep people talking. And that’s definitely one of the reasons that designers are so happy to hand over freebies to celebrities in the first place.

Haircut Tips For Women Over 50

Do you look as old as you feel? Ageing is a part of life, instead of rebelling against nature; embrace this time, remember life is short. There are however many ways in which you can change or alter your appearance gracefully, but let's have a look at how you can achieve the perfect hairstyle to defy your age.

The first thing most women over fifty tend to do is chop off their hair and color it a darker shade to cover the gray, but should you do the same? The smart money says - No, you can have long medium or short hair, because a fifty year old woman can look just as good as a twenty year old with the same hairstyle. Natural looking highlights can alter your look drastically, lightening and lifting your face.

The most important aspect of a new style revolves around taking your facial shape into consideration and determining what features you want to accentuate or hide away. Hair becomes dry and limp so be sure to deep moisturize your hair regularly, making it shiny and full of life.

If you have fine lines and wrinkles, soften them by adding layers around the face. It is strongly recommended to add layers if you have long hair, it will lift your face. Layers will add body and volume to your hair. Expression lines on the forehead can easily be covered up by adding bangs, try side swept bangs as they will add softness and generate a chic edge to your hairstyle. Remember bangs can be added regardless of the length of your hair.

Perhaps you want to hide your neck area and have longer cut layers which will divert attention. You don't need to hide everything though, if you have beautiful eyes, accentuate them with bangs skimming the brow area. Some soft layers may highlight lovely cheekbones. If you want to show off your neckline have a shorter bob haircut.

Often people advise you to have a picture of a hairstyle you like. Remember to focus on the haircut rather than on the person sporting it. Technology can also be very helpful, some of the latest software programs online allow you to upload a current photo of yourself and try out numerous different hairstyles.

If you haven't changed your hairstyle in the last few years - now is the time; outdated styles definitely give away your age. Stay current; be daring and young at heart. Remember you are as old as you feel.

Bob Haircuts 2010

One of the most flattering hairscuts and versatile is the bob. It comes in all lengths, can be worn curly, wavy or straight and there is one to suit almost everyone - is all you need to know how to be good for you!

2010's Most Popular Wedding Hair Accessories

There are an incredible number of beautiful wedding hair accessories for brides-to-be to choose from when it comes time to prepare for their upcoming special day. Every bride wants to look and feel their best on their wedding day which will include not only having the dress of her dreams but also choosing the most flattering and attractive hairstyle.

Regardless of your hair length or style, wedding hair accessories are an absolute must to achieve a variety of gorgeous looks suitable for all types of affairs from the most formal to the most casual nuptials. To help you choose from the many available, here's a look at the most popular wedding hair accessories for the modern bride in 2010 and beyond.

Hair Clips, Pins and Barrettes

Hair clips, pins, and barrettes were once used strictly for their functionality, which was to keep hair securely in place. However, they have all evolved considerably in recent years and become quite the popular choice for brides everywhere thanks to their many diverse types and decorative styles.

Whatever the theme of your wedding and whatever bridal style you prefer, whether it's bohemian, classic, edgy, or romantic you will surely find a hair pin or similar piece to complement your look. Choose from clips, pins, and barrettes adorned with just about anything you could think of including angels, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, flowers of all types, ladybugs, nautical themed items, and vintage pieces, just to name a very few.

For 2010, the theatrical look has seen a great resurgence in popularity and this ultra trendy style can easily be accommodated by hair combs that feature oversized flowers, feathery plumes of a rainbow of colors, and pieces of fabrics such as organza and tulle.

Jeweled Hair Combs and Headbands

Much like clips, pins, and barrettes, jeweled hair combs and headbands also serve the purpose of keeping the hair neatly in place but also add a bit of interest and pizazz to the bride's hairstyle.

Combs can be made of genuine or faux gemstones and worn on one or both sides of the head. Headbands for brides may be thin, delicate and barely noticeable or they may be much wider, made of several rows, and used to draw attention to the hairstyle.

Bridal Tiaras

Tiaras, headpieces once strictly reserved for royalty, are and always will be a classic wedding hair accessories that has withstood the test of time for centuries. There are tiaras suitable for every bride's tastes ranging from the traditional to the modern to the contemporary and available in all shapes, styles, and sizes.

Do keep in mind that you can also use an array of flowers, either real or faux, to complement your wedding hair accessory, or perhaps in place of one or maybe even attached to a plain comb or barrette.

The truly crafty and imaginative bride may even wish to make her very own hair accessories from a combination of several individual pieces to create a unique, one-of-a-kind look that will help her to feel even more beautiful on her wedding day.

Bridal Veils For Short Hair

Wearing a veil is a very special part of being a bride. It can be difficult to figure out how to pair a veil with a short haircut, however, both in terms of style and stability. These are some great ideas on bridal veils for short hair.

The number one concern for brides with short hair when it comes to veils is, "how can I keep it from slipping out?" There is no question that the less hair you have, the more difficult it is to anchor your veil and give it some stability. However, don't let that discourage you from wearing a bridal veil if it is something you would like to do. With a bit of creativity in your hairstyle, and some help from your bridal hair jewelry, you will be able to wear a beautiful veil for your wedding.

The first step in selecting a veil for short hair is to speak with your hairstylist. It also depends just how short your hair really is, and whether you intend to grow it a little longer for the wedding. If you have a chin length bob, you will have more options than you may think. Hair of that length can actually be pulled back into a French twist, which will make securing a veil much easier. Simply place the metal comb of the veil into your hair above the twist. Tuck a few hairpins or a crystal jeweled comb into the side of the twist, and you will have an elegant look that is perfect with any length veil.

Another option for chin length hair is to have your stylist pull back just a little at the crown. A good hairstylist can use that little section of hair to create an anchor for the comb of a veil, either by backcombing or even creating tiny braids underneath the top layer of hair; the little braids would be invisible, in other words, but make an excellent anchor for the veil. With the rest of your hair remaining chin length, a shorter veil tends to look more in proportion than a long one. A waist length veil with a ribbon edge would be darling; top it off with bridal hair jewelry such as a pearl beaded comb tucked right in front of the veil. One nice thing about a shortie veil is that it is so comfortable that you can wear it for the entire wedding, right through the end of the reception (a good thing, too, as it might be hard to pull the comb out of your backcombing or tiny braids without making a mess of your hairdo).

Even brides whose hair is too short to pull back at all can still wear a veil. The most surefire way to secure a bridal veil in very short hair is by stitching it to a wreath or circlet. The best wreaths are made on slightly flexible frames which can actually be gently bent to conform to the shape of your head for a perfect fit. Sometimes there will be a small metal comb in the front of the wreath which will go into the hair on the top of your head (helpful if your hairstyle has enough hairspray to hold the comb). The veil then flows down the back of the wreath in a very woodland fairy effect. A calf length veil with minimal fullness would be ideal (anything longer will add weight and increase the likelihood the wreath will slip backwards). The key to a bridal wreath is to keep the embellishments on it extremely dainty so that you do not look like a flower girl.

If a wreath is not your style, think about choosing a jaunty cap with a bit of netting instead of a traditional veil. It is a very chic and modern look which is ideally suited to short hair. A birdcage veil can be a great compromise between a traditional veil and going without a veil for a bride with a short haircut. It allows you to show off your modern hairstyle while still feeling like a romantic bride.

Bridal Hair - Finding The Style That Is Right For You

If you ask a woman what one of the most important days of their life is or was you can pretty much guarantee you will hear wedding day mentioned a lot more than once. As one of the most important days in a woman's life, having a bad hair day just simply won't do.

The last thing that you need on your wedding day is for your chosen hairstyle to go completely wrong. We all know that no one can guarantee that your big day will go entirely smoothly but there are certain things that can be done to ensure that no matter what else happens your hair will look beautiful.

As with all the other details of your wedding day, your hairstyle will be chosen well in advance of the big day. You will want to look just right and your hairstyle has to be perfect, which is why when it comes to choosing your wedding hairstyle there are many options open to you. The first step that can be taken to achieve your perfect hair style is to look through bridal magazines for inspiration. There are plenty of these magazines on the market today; you will be spoilt for choice. As well as flicking through the latest bridal magazines you can use the Internet as a tool to fine websites that display an array of styles, all of which are suited to specific hair lengths, hair colour and face shape.

The one thing that you need to remain when it comes to choosing your perfect wedding hairstyle is realistic. The style that has caught your eye in a magazine may be the most glamorous or romantic style that you have ever seen but will you be able to pull it off? When you are looking for your most desired style bare in mind your own hair type; it is straight, curly, fine, thick, long or short? You need to know whether the style that you are hoping for will take well to your own hair type.

Always remember to be open to new ideas. There may be a wedding hairstyle out there that will look perfect on you but you could have easily overlooked it due to the nature of the hairstyle not being like the styles that you normally wear in your hair. This is why it is valuable to talk to your hair stylist. Discuss styles and explain what you are hoping to achieve with your hair style. Together with your stylist you will be able to find the best style for your hair on your wedding day.

When it comes to bridal hair you have more options open to you than for any other occasion. There are a lot of things to consider such as, should I wear my hair up or down? The answer to this question depends on two things, one is your hair long enough to wear in an 'updo?' and two what is your face shape? People who have a round face shape suit hair styles such as high updo's and well as sleek long styles. People with long faces suit styles that have width and volume. With updo's it is advised to wear your hair with a few loose wispy pieces that frame your face, by doing this you will take the sharpness out of the style, softening your face. This style is a good representation of a more romantic bridal hairstyle.

You should also consider your options when it comes to are you going to wear your hair curly or straight? Also are you going to include tiaras or a veil in your style? If you do decide to include a tiara or veil within your hairstyle it should always compliment your style and never hide it. Remember if you are wearing a veil your hair shouldn't be worn longer than the veil.

No matter what style you decide on for your big day, it is always important to trial your hairstyle before your wedding and if possible take photographs of your wedding dress to the hairdressers with you. By doing both of these things you will avoid a hair disaster as you will know before hand that you hair not only compliments your dress but also that you can pull the style off and that it can easily be applied to your hair.

There are also certain things that you should keep in mind on your wedding day when you are going to get your hair done. You should never wash or condition your hair prior to going to the hairdressers and make sure that you wear clothing with buttons or a zip so that when you are changing into your dress your hairstyle will not get affected.

Top 7 Wedding Hairstyles For 2010

The crowning glory of every woman is their hair. The styles, embellishments and length all play an important role when it is time to do her wedding hairstyle. This year, the hairstyles that top the charts are classic yet modern, simply to accommodate the ever-changing trend each year. And a bride will do everything to get a great and glamorous hairdo on her special day not just to wow her groom but also to feel confident.

For the year 2010, many women are growing their hair long and applying various hairstyles to fit their tastes. Same goes for many would-be brides because most of them find it easier to style longer hair than short hair.

So for this year, here are the top 7 wedding hairstyles that you can choose from to show-off your crowning glory:

(1) Curly wedding hairstyle There are a variety of curly hairstyles that can be done to the bride's hair. Whether it is long, up to half of her back, or short just above her shoulders, she can have curly hairstyle that can fit her hair's length. For longer hair, bigger and more curls can be made compared to shorter hair.Head pieces such as headbands, feather clips, pearls and flowers can accentuate the overall style. Most often, a curly hairstyle is loose instead of tied in a ponytail. So check the best style for your hair and choose the best accessories that can add glamour.
(2) Up do for long hair,As mentioned earlier, many women are preparing their hair for the much awaited event of their lives. If you are one of them, by now your locks are longer and ready for hairstyling. One of the trends for up dos is applying bouffant to volumize the hair at the back. Another is if you have bangs, you can have a clean bouffant and bangs at the same time. This will depend if your hairstylist will want to use both, so it's important that the style will fit your overall look.
(3) Semi up do for long hair,Some brides love the semi up do with bouffant. This has become a trend in the recent years as many women still want the length of their hair flowing freely for a dramatic look. The free-flowing hair can either be curled or just left straight.
(4) Ponytail,Some brides prefer simple and yet elegant hairstyles such as the ponytail. You can tell your hairstylist to accentuate the ponytail with flowers or gorgeous hair clips. The loose hair can be curled or straight, whichever will suit your overall look.
Other brides add bouffant with ponytail, while some just prefer the simpler version of a clean and combed ponytail. Other brides with bangs can apply either the simple or with neat bouffant for more hair volume.
(5) Side ponytail,Here's a version of the regular ponytail that some brides are opting for. A regular ponytail can be more dramatic and stylish when tied on one side and accentuated with a barrette, flowers or other hair accessories. This can be applied to long hair as well as to shoulder-length hair. The idea is to add some style and accents to further beautify the hairstyle.
(6) Short and sweet hairstyle Who says short hair cannot be styled on her wedding day? Short hair can be curled and styled according to the cut of the hair. If it is too short, it is best to use hair accents such as hair clips, small flowers and accessories to add a touch of elegance.
(7) Avante garde wedding hairstyle,There are some brides who prefer non-traditional hairstyles for their weddings. The avante garde style for brides may have some touch of tradition and yet they are uniquely different. The contrast could be from the hair color to the choice of headpieces or to overall look of the hair.

This is a daring hairstyle and not every woman can pull it off. There were some female celebrities who opted for avante garde hairstyles during their weddings, and it takes enough confidence a good hairstylist in order for this hairstyle to bring out the best in you.

Choosing the best hairstyle for your wedding day may be stressful, but it shouldn't be. It is advisable that you talk to your hairstylist so you can try various styles and see what will make you more gorgeous. And remember that it's not always dependent on the length of your hair, but how the style will fit you and how it can make you prettier on your special day.
